After a long career in walking, I started running about 5 years ago. I’m a slow but steady (and somewhat on and off) runner. Believe me when I say I’m not breaking any records for my shuffling! In 2011 I ran the Mother’s Day Classic for the first time as a quiet and very personal tribute to my mum who experienced breast cancer in 2001 and not only survived, but thrived. In 2012 I missed the run but also had my own experience with breast cancer, being diagnosed with a very small, very early form of cancer. I completed treatment on 29 December 2012 and have so far been clear. In 2014 I returned to the Mother’s Day Classic, this time at the Domain and ran alone again as my own little celebration a year or so on from my experience with breast cancer. I vowed last year that not only would I run again in 2015, but that I would not run alone.

I ran in the event last year about when I started as CEO of Playgroup NSW and I couldn’t help but notice how many families attended and in particular the number of mothers of children aged 0 – 5 running and walking and the opportunity presented by the number of children filling in time while their mum finished the race. I thought then that it would be a great partnership for Playgroup NSW and such a positive message about the organisation. I know that breast cancer affects many of our members in one way or another.

I was fortunate enough to meet the CEO of the MDC, Sharon Morris, at a conference and she was also immediately struck by the shared values and demographic of MDC and Playgroup. We’ve worked together over the last 6 months to come up with a partnership of mutual benefit.. Our partnership gives us a role at the events in the Domain and Parramatta, providing positive play activities for families and children (during and after the event) as well a chance to talk with thousands of our demographic of families about playgroup and what we can offer them.

We are also keen to support the wonderful event by encouraging our staff and members to participate and putting a team together – focus is on fun and participation.
