Every run and every walk is different. The pace, distance and intensity will vary amongst individuals, which is why there are shoes specifically designed for the different styles within both the running and walking categories.
Preparing for the Mother’s Day Classic event will be dependent on several factors including your distance of choice, previous experience in the chosen distance, personal goals, exercise clothing and footwear.
The correct footwear is important in helping you reach your goals more easily, as well as reducing the chance of injury. But what should you look for in a shoe to help you achieve your best at this year’s Mother’s Day Classic?
Walking versus Running Biomechanics
The running gait cycle differs to walking as it has the inclusion of an extra phase called the float phase, which is when both legs are off the ground.
When running, the stance phase accounts for approximately 40% of the gait cycle, swing phase for 30% and float phase for 30%. It is during the stance phase of both running and walking that injuries are most likely to occur, as it is in this phase where the foot comes into contact with the ground, impacting on joints and muscles.
The walking gait has typically less pronation, and is therefore straighter. The running gait follows an “s” shaped pattern from the lateral heel, rolling in at the ball of the foot, to rolling back out at the toe.
What does this mean for my footwear?
Ideally, if you are going to clock up the kilometres prior to the event and you are participating in the walk, we would recommend that you have a dedicated walking shoe. These shoes will have a harder wearing outsole to cater for the increased level of contact that your foot will have with the ground during the walking gait. Walking shoes will also have the added protection around the big toe as most walkers’ experience wear through the upper toe area well before the shoes have worn out. TIP: If you wear a technical sock with added padding around the big toe in conjunction with a lock lacing technique, this will reduce wear.
Ensuring Fit in Your Shoes
Ensuring the overall fit of your shoes is essential. Correctly fitted shoes allow for your foot to move naturally within.
Does your forefoot shape fit perfectly? When you walk or run, does your heel remain stable in the heel counter for added stability? Does the shape of the shoe fit your biomechanical tendency?
The Athlete’s Foot Fit Technicians understand the importance of matching the right shoes to the right feet and activities, so why not come in store to be fitted by an expert so you can achieve your best at the Mother’s Day Classic.
