The Canberra MDC for 2016 will be at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park and involves a 5km run or walk and a 10km run around the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin starting to the east and heading towards Kings Bridge.

Enter by 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 to have your race number mailed to you before the event. If you enter after 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 you must collect your race number on the morning of the event from the number pick-up marquee. Please ensure you bring a PRINTED COPY of your entry to obtain the race pack.

Race packs, race numbers & timing

RACE PACKS

Will commence being sent out on Wednesday 30 March 2016.

Enter by 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 to have your race number mailed to you before the event. If you enter after 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 you must collect your race number on the morning of the event from the number pick-up marquee. Please ensure you bring a PRINTED COPY of your entry to obtain the race pack.

Your race pack will contain your race number and timing chip if applicable. Merchandise is sent separately. If you registered several people at once, you will not necessarily receive all the race packs on the same day as they are processed individually. If you are concerned that you have not received your race number, please contact the Canberra event managers on 1300 762 241.

RACE NUMBERS

Please note that all runners and walkers need to pin their race number on the front of their top before arriving at the event. Anyone without a race number will not be permitted to start the event.

TIMING

Only runners will be given a timing tag, which will be attached to the back of your race number. Please ensure that your timing tag is attached correctly. You will not receive a time if you do not have a timing tag. After the event, please dispose of your race number and timing tag thoughtfully.

Pacers: For the first time ever we will have on course pacers! Whether you are walking or running you can challenge yourself to a personal best. Just look for the tutu wearing volunteer pacer with a balloon with your goal time and join them for the course to achieve your fitness goals.

On the day timetable

Please arrive at the assembly area at least 30 minutes prior to your event in order to allow plenty of time to register and warm up.

The Course

View Courses

Walkers and runners will be using the same course from Wendouree Drive near Rond Terrace and will run or walk around the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin starting to the east and heading towards Kings Bridge. The 5km run/walk completes one lap of the course while the 10km runners will complete two laps of the course.

Start Line - The start line will be located on Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park, and the course will follow the footpath along the scenic Lake Burley Griffin. All participants will be directed to the start line following their warm-up aerobics.

Finish Line - Will be positioned adjacent to Lake Burley Griffen in Rond Terrace.

Results

Results will be available here on the Mother’s Day Classic website from Monday 9 May 2016. Remember, only runners will be timed.

Event day

Assembly area

The assembly area is located at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park at the bottom of Anzac Parade.

Please utilise the underpass joining Constitution Avenue and Commonwealth Park to access the assembly area. It is not safe to cross Parkes Way at any given point in time. 

Information marquees

There is an information marquee located at the assembly area. If you have any queries please go to the information marquee.

Tribute wall

Tribute cards can be attached to your top in support or memory of a loved one touched by breast cancer. Tribute cards can be downloaded from the website, requested via the registration process or collected on day from the information marquee. A special Tribute Wall will be located at the assembly area. Participants can choose to pin their tribute cards to the wall after their run or walk.

Cloak Room (bag drop)

A cloak room marquee will be located in the assembly area for storage of your clothing or bags during the run/walk. Bikes cannot be placed in the cloak room.

Please use the tear off strip from your race number to attach to your backpack or clothing bag.

Please do not place valuables in the cloak room as we cannot accept responsibility for valuables lost or stolen.

First aid

First aid station will be located at the finish line. If you require medical assistance while out on the course, please notify the nearest course marshal and they will contact the appropriate personnel to assist you.

Water stations

Water is provided at 3 drink stations: two on the course and one at the finish line.

Toilets

Toilets will be located at the assembly area.

Baby change

There will be a baby change and feed marquee in the main assembly area.

Meeting places

Be sure you arrange a clear meeting place for your family or team. We recommend meeting in the assembly area. The start line will be very crowded and a difficult meeting place.

Entertainment

The Mother’s Day Classic includes lots of extra activities for kids and adults. These include warm-up aerobics, roving performers, a food court, free massages, entertainment plus a kid’s activity area with face painting and a jumping castle.

A number of delegates, celebrities and sponsors will be giving brief talks on the main stage. The main stage will also be used for the memorial minute of silence, warm-up aerobics and award presentations.

There will be coffee carts and food stalls including a sausage sizzle.

Due to its great success at this year’s event, we will be offering our Kids Corner again this year. Make sure you come and swing by to say hi. With a focus on families, the kids corner is expanding every week.

Getting there

Car parking

Car parking is available in the car parks along Constitution Avenue. There are underpasses joining Constitution Avenue to Commonwealth Park. Please adhere to all parking restrictions. Where possible, please car pool to the event.

To avoid a potential parking fine please do not park at the nature strip at Parkes Way.

Drop-off zone

A drop-off zone will be located in the car park directly in front of Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park. Drivers will be permitted to drop participants off and then seek parking elsewhere. Limited disabled parking is available within the drop-off zone.

Road closures

  • BOWEN DRIVE: At the intersection with Brisbane Avenue.
  • BOWEN PLACE: At intersection with King Edward Terrace.
  • KING EDWARD TERRACE: At the intersection with Parkes Place East.
  • DOROTHY TANGNEY PLACE: At the intersection with King Edward Terrace.
  • WENDOUREE DRIVE: Between Kings Avenue and Constitution Avenue.
  • KINGS AVENUE: Eastbound ramp to Bowen Place and King Edward Terrace.
  • TIME: From 5.00 am to 12.30 pm on Sunday 8 May 2016.

Prizes and trophies

All participants receive a 2016 medallion, which cleverly converts to a key ring.

Age category medals

Mailed after the event for the winners of the 5km and 10km running events in each age category. Age categories - U15, U18, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.

Team awards and presentations will be held on the main stage in the assembly area from 9.00am.

The run presentation ceremonies will be held on the main stage with trophies awarded to first, second and third placegetters. It is expected that winners are present to accept their prize.
Presentation times are as follow:

  • 10km runners at 9.55am
  • 5km runners at 10.20am

Runner's please note: Your results will be produced by net time. The timing tag attached to your race bib will record your official time from when you cross the start line until you cross the finish line. However, trophies will be awarded to the first three males and females in each event based on gun time. So, if you feel you have a chance of placing, please run in the first wave of your chosen distance.

Spot prizes

All participants are eligible to win great spot prizes including weekend packages, meals and gift baskets.

Questions?

Can I change the event I am in?

Yes, but you must let us know via email at canberra@solemotive.com or phone on 1300 762 241. If you decide to change your event on the day, please go to the race numbers marquee so they can record the change. See below for requirements of changing events.

Changing from walk to run: It is imperative you let us know as you need to be issued with a new event number and a timing tag. You will be charged an additional $5 for your new race number and / or timing tag (please note it is mandatory that all runners have a timing tag attached to their race bib).

Changing from run to walk: Please let us know as we will need to update your records, however you will keep the same race number even though it has a timing tag attached to the back.

Changing distances only:

Run – It is imperative you let us know as we will need to update our records. You will retain the same race number and timing tag.

Walk – No need to advise us, just depart at the correct walk start time and complete either one or two laps of the course, according to your distance chosen.

Please note that you will be charged a $5 administration fee for event changes.

What if I lose my race number or timing tag?

Walkers - Please collect another race number from the race numbers marquee in the assembly area on the morning of the event for an additional fee of $5.

Runners – Please collect another race bib and timing tag from the race numbers marquee in the assembly area on the morning of the event. There will be an additional charge of $9 total for replacement of the race number + timing tag.

All participants must wear a race number. Anyone without a race number will not be permitted to start the event.
