The Melbourne MDC for 2016 will be at Alexandra Gardens and involves a 4km and 8km walk and run around the Tan Track, Melbourne.

Enter by 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 to have your race number mailed to you before the event. If you enter after 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 you must collect your race number on the morning of the event from the number pick-up marquee, or at the event site on Saturday 7 May between 10.00am-3.00pm. Please ensure you bring a PRINTED COPY of your entry to obtain the race pack.

MERCHANDISE

Missed out on getting MDC merchandise online? We have a kiosk set up at Southgate, Melbourne from Saturday 30 April - Friday 6 May selling a limited selection of stock. The kiosk in located in the centre of the walk way next to Blue Train in Southgate and is open 11.00am to 2.00pm.

At the kiosk you can also view the MDC Tribute Wall, write a tribute and register for the event.

Race packs, race numbers & timing

RACE PACKS

Will commence being sent out early April 2016.

Enter by 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 to have your race number mailed to you before the event. If you enter after 9.00am on Friday 29 April 2016 you must collect your race number on the morning of the event from the number pick-up marquee, on at the event site on Saturday 7 May between 10.00am-3.00pm. Please ensure you bring a PRINTED COPY of your entry to obtain the race pack.

Your race pack will contain your race number and timing chip if applicable. Merchandise is sent separately. If you registered several people at once, you will not necessarily receive all the race packs on the same day as they are processed individually. If you are concerned that you have not received your race number, please contact the Melbourne event managers on 03 9285 0600.

RACE NUMBERS

Please note that all runners and walkers need to pin their race number on the front of their top before arriving at the event. Anyone without a race number will not be permitted to start the event.

TIMING

Only runners will be given a timing tag, which will be attached to the back of your race number. Please ensure that your timing tag is attached correctly. You will not receive a time if you do not have a timing tag.

On the day timetable

Please arrive at the assembly area at least 45 minutes prior to your event in order to allow plenty of time to register and warm up.

The 8km and 4km run and walk events will have three wave starts – this process is to assist in minimizing congestion on course. You must select a wave start during the registration process.

The Course

The course follows the roads around the Royal Botanic Gardens, with the finish line on St Kilda Road. The start line is on Alexandra Avenue, near the Pillars of Wisdom. Both the run and walk events go in a clockwise direction around the circuit.

The 4km and 8km runs are stageged separately to the 4km and 8km walks.

Results

Results will be available here on the Mother’s Day Classic website from Monday 9 May 2016. Remember, only runners will be timed.

Event day

Assembly area

Is located at Alexandra Gardens. Please follow instructions from event staff for directions to the start line or ask one of our friendly volunteers wearing information T-shirts for assistance if required.

Information marquees

The information marquees are located at various sites throughout the assembly area in Alexandra Gardens, and at the start line and finish line. Please go to the information marquees if you are unsure of anything.

Tribute wall

Tribute cards can be attached to your top in support or memory of a loved one touched by breast cancer. Tribute cards can be downloaded from the website, requested via the registration process or collected on day from the information marquee.

A special Tribute Wall will be located at Alexandra Gardens. Participants can choose to pin their tribute cards to the wall after their run or walk. A selection of the tributes will be displayed at Federation Square in the week following the event.

SouthgateA special tribute kiosk has been installed at Southgate to display tributes from past MDC participants. These tributes will be on display until Friday 13 May 2016.

The Langham Melbourne Cloak Room (bag drop)

Participant clothing will be placed in individual storage areas during the event. Participants should attach the tear-off strip on the bottom of your event number to your backpack or plastic clothing bag by looping one end of the tag through the hole. When you drop your clothing off, an attendant will write the storage area on your race number. Please keep your event number as you will need it for bag pick up when you finish. Please do not leave valuables in your bags. The Mother’s Day Classic will take all care, but no responsibility, for valuables or clothing that are lost or damaged. Any clothing not collected on the day or left at the start line will be given to charity.

You cannot check bikes into the bag drop.

First aid

There are two first aid stations on the course, positioned at the 2km/6km mark and the 3km/7km mark, as well as roving first aid bike crews. There are also first aid stations at the assembly area and the finish area.

If you require medical assistance while out on the course, please notify the nearest course marshal and they will contact the appropriate personnel to assist you.

Water stations

Water will be provided at the assembly area, on the course, and at the finish line.

Toilets

Toilets are located on Boathouse Drive, adjacent to the boatsheds. There will also be toilets located on Alexandra Avenue, just past Swan Street Bridge, on the way to the start line. A small number of toilets will also be located on the course.

Baby change

There will be a baby change and feed marquee in the main assembly area.

Meeting places

Be sure you arrange a clear meeting place for your family or team. We recommend meeting in the assembly area. The start line will be very crowded and a difficult meeting place.

 

Entertainment

Main stage

There will be free entertainment from the main stage including warm-up aerobics before each event, appearances from our celebrity and community ambassadors.

Kids Zone

We’ve created two zones this year – big kids zone with a Rock Climbing Wall and Face painting, and little kiddies will be well catered for with a Petting Zoo and the Spinning Tea Cups. We have also managed to squeeze in our old favourite, fairy floss. After your run or walk head to the kids zone ticket marquees and purchase as many tickets as you like. Then relax and let the kids run wild and enjoy!

Ticket pricing – Everything is $3 each (includes Face Painting, Fairy Floss, Rock Climbing and Tea Cups). Or purchase a Kid’s zone pass for $10 and get unlimited access to all of the above accept Fairy Floss.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT

Look out for all an array of entertainers roaming the course and across the site. There will be balloon and fairy clowns, stilt walkers and plenty of live music. 

There will also be giveaways for the best fancy-dress costumes - so get creative and remember to come dressed to impress!

Food

At the food court in the assembly area you will find a wide selection of food, coffee and drinks to enjoy including Mother’s Day Classic BBQ and healthy fruit salads.

Getting there

Train

Disembark at Flinders Street Station and take the Swanston Street exit from the station and turn right. Marshals will be present to direct you to the assembly area at Alexandra Gardens. You can also disembark at Richmond Station and walk up Swan Street to the start line.

Please note that trains will run on a regular Sunday timetable. Public transport route and timetable information can be found on the PTV website at ptv.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 007.  

Please note, that due to the Government's trial of all night public transport on weekends, runners and volunteers can now access public transport to get to the event.

Tram

Tram numbers 3, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 & 72 all travel down St Kilda Road. Disembark at the Arts Centre and cross the road to Alexandra Gardens.

Please note, that due to the Government's trial of all night public transport on weekends, runners and volunteers can now access public transport to get to the event.

Cycle

Bicycle parking will be available on Boathouse Drive. Please bring a lock. We cannot accept responsibility for bikes lost or stolen.

Car parking

Southgate Car Park* (access from City Road or Southgate Avenue) is open 24hrs this Mother's Day weekend for a flat day parking rate of only $12**. Southgate Car Park is located directly underneath Southgate Restaurant and Shopping Precinct and is right next to Alexandra Gardens.

*Park at Southgate on Sunday 8 May and 20% of the weekend rate of $12 will go towards the Mother's Day Classic fundraising for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
**$12 weekend rate applies for a single day only. Exit by 6am the following day. For more information visit www.southgatemelbourne.com.au.

Car parking is extremely limited. It is strongly recommended you car pool to the event and arrive early to guarantee a park.

  • Southgate (access from City Road or Southgate Avenue) is open 24hrs for a flat rate of $12 - see above.
  • Federation Square car park is open from 8am for a flat rate of $15
  • Arts Centre car park is open 24hrs for a flat rate of $19

Please be aware of the event course and avoid parking on the run/walk course and adhere to parking restrictions if parking on the streets.

Access and mobility

There will be an accessible drop-off point on event day on St. Kilda Road in front of the Arts Centre. St. Kilda Road will be closed for South bound traffic. All traffic wishing to use the accessible drop-off point must approach from the northbound lanes.

Disabled parking is available at the Arts Centre car park.

ROAD CLOSURES

The following roads will be closed between 5.00am-1.00pm on Sunday 8 May 2016:

  • St Kilda Road southbound between Flinders St and Government House Drive;
  • Alexandra Avenue between Punt Road and the Swan Street Bridge;
  • Linlithgow Avenue from Alexandra Avenue to St Kilda Road and Government House Drive;
  • Birdwood Avenue between Government House Drive and Domain Road;
  • Domain Road between Birdwood Avenue and Anderson Street;
  • Anderson Street between Domain Road and Alexandra Avenue;
  • Dallas Brooks Drive;
  • Boathouse Drive.

Age category medals

Mailed after the event 4km and 8km runs winners for each age category. Age categories - U15, U18, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.

Runner's prizes

The run presentation ceremonies will be held at the completion of each running event at the finish line stage. Trophies will be given to first, second and third placegetters. It is expected that winners are present to accept their prize.

  • 8km runners at 8.00am
  • 4km runners at 8.45am

Team awards and presentations will be held on the main stage in the assembly area from 11.30am.

Runner's please note: Your results will be produced by net time. The timing tag attached to your race bib will record your official time from when you cross the start line until you cross the finish line. However, trophies will be awarded to the first three males and females in each event based on gun time. So, if you feel you have a chance of placing, please run in the first wave of your chosen distance.

Questions?

Can I change the event I am in?

Yes, but you must let us know via email at melbourne@solemotive.com or phone on 03 9285 0600. If you decide to change your event on the day, please go to the race numbers marquee at Alexandra Gardens so they can record the change. See below for requirements of changing events.

Changing from walk to run: It is imperative you let us know as you need to be issued with a new event number and a timing tag. You will be charged an additional $5 for your new race number and / or timing tag (please note it is mandatory that all runners have a timing tag attached to their race bib).

Changing from run to walk: Please let us know as we will need to update your records, however you will keep the same race number even though it has a timing tag attached to the back.

Changing distances only:

Run – It is imperative you let us know as we will need to update our records. You will retain the same race number and timing tag.

Walk – No need to advise us, just depart at the correct walk start time and complete either one or two laps of the course, according to your distance chosen.

Please note, if we are required to change you registration information for a change of event, you will be charged a $5 administration fee. 

What if I lose my race number or timing tag?

Walkers - Please collect another race number from the race numbers marquee in the assembly area on the morning of the event for an additional fee of $5.

Runners – Please collect another race bib and timing tag from the race numbers marquee in the assembly area on the morning of the event. There will be an additional charge of $9 total for replacement of the race number + timing tag.

All participants must wear a race number. Anyone without a race number will not be permitted to start the event.
