Australians across the country helped raise $2.1 million for research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer in this year’s Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic. A record number of 100,000 people took part in the 2010 national fun run/walk and raised the highest amount of funds in the event’s thirteen year history.
“We thank all Mother’s Day Classic participants and fundraisers who dedicated their time to support our annual event and raise record funds for breast cancer research,” Louise Davidson, National Chair of the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic said at a thank you function held today in Melbourne.
A cheque for $2.1 million was handed to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Chair, Hon Ros Kelly AO who said “The Mother’s Day Classic is National Breast Cancer Foundation’s largest fundraising event and we truly appreciate the fantastic support everyone gives to help fund our important research projects across Australia.”
The funds raised by the Women in Super’s Mother’s Day Classic will assist the thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer annually by supporting vital research into a broad range of aspects of breast cancer.
Record numbers of people took part in the 2010 Mother’s Day Classic events in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Geelong, Gold Coast, Hobart, Melbourne, Parramatta, Perth and Sydney’s Domain. There was also a huge increase in participation in the 23 regional Australian events. Overall, participant numbers increased nationally from 80,000 in 2009 to 100,000 walkers and runners in 2010.
The dedication from individual fundraisers in every state has helped the Mother’s Day Classic donate even more dollars to breast cancer research. In 2010 individual fundraisers raised more funds than in any previous year. In Victoria Kym Berchtenbreiter raised $17,190, in NSW Fiona Balfour raised $17,986, Queensland’s Meaka Shordon raised $8,000, WA’s Julie Bevan raised $10,361, ACT’s Lauren Couter raised $12,145, South Australia’s Natalie Barton raised $4,756 and Tasmania’s David Williams raised $1,285.
ME Bank, the major sponsor of the Mother’s Day Classic, raised a further $42,477 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation by encouraging participants to take part in their ‘Go the Extra Step’ pedometer campaign in Melbourne, Domain and Perth. ME Bank has proudly supported the Mother’s Day Classic as the major sponsor for six consecutive years.
The Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic has raised a total of more than $7.8 million for breast cancer research since the first event in 1998. This investment in research has led to better detection and treatments, improving the survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
The Mother’s Day Classic 2011 will take place on Sunday 8 May.
