Yiayia’s Warriors, In Loving Memory of Athanasia
On Sunday 10 May, we will once again lace up our runners for the Mother’s Day Classic, walking and running with full hearts as Yiayia’s Warriors.
This team was born from love.
What began as a father and daughter wanting to honour a deeply loved mother and Yiayia, our beautiful Athanasia, grew into something far greater than we ever imagined. In our first year, 14 incredible people stood beside us, and together we raised over $16,000 for breast cancer research. More importantly, we carried Yiayia’s spirit with us every step of the way.
Athanasia was a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a storyteller, a feeder of many, and someone whose door (and arms) were always open. She welcomed everyone with warmth, kindness, and love. Even during her battle with breast cancer, her strength and grace never wavered. Though she lost her fight, her courage continues to inspire ours.
This year, we return with the same determination hoping to raise $15,000 more for vital breast cancer research.
Every day in Australia, 63 people are diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, and 12 families lose someone they love. Behind every number is a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a daughter, a friend. Someone like our Yiayia.
We walk for her.
We run for them.
We fundraise for a future where fewer families have to say goodbye too soon.
Yiayia’s Warriors is open to anyone who would like to walk or run beside us in memory or honour of a loved one. Just as Yiayia welcomed everyone into her home, we welcome you into our team, with open arms and open hearts.
