Cbus Super’s 40 year journey: blazing trails and legacies alongside the Mother’s Day Classic

In those early days back in 1984, a group of visionaries including our first Fund Secretary, Mavis Robertson, worked tirelessly with others to create something better for the retirements of building and construction workers. Mavis was a pioneer in creating the culture of industry funds. Her contribution has left an enormous legacy for Australian workers, forging a path for women in superannuation and transforming retirements and our economy.

Mavis was responsible for many initiatives in superannuation that stand today. Noting a lack of opportunity for women in superannuation to network spurned her idea to create Women in Super in 1994.

And then in 1998, Mavis was inspired to create the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic after she witnessed a fun run overseas where people were participating to show support to a loved one with breast cancer, raising funds and awareness. Joining forces with Louise Davidson AM, they saw an opportunity to contribute to increased funding for breast cancer research in Australia. Mavis and Louise were acutely aware that women who were affected by breast cancer were often not reaching retirement age and were determined to create change through their networks.

Twenty-six years on, the Mother’s Day Classic is the largest contributor of research funds to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

With Cbus proudly celebrating the Fund’s 40th anniversary this year, partnering with the Mother’s Day Classic is an impactful way to both acknowledge and continue Mavis and Louise's vision. This advocacy takes an important step in 2024 by not only fundraising for breast cancer but, for the first time, for ovarian cancer too. Cbus will draw together a team of dedicated volunteers, work colleagues, friends and family to support this special event on Sunday 12 May.

Cbus looks forward to joining forces with the event’s supporters this year to make this the biggest Mother’s Day event yet. The wide support from that initial spark of an idea by Mavis to create the Classic is a reflection of how our superannuation system has grown over the past decades to create lasting change for Australian women by improving retirement outcomes and supporting important initiatives.
